Instagram has rolled out a series of new features aimed at enhancing user engagement and social connectivity on the platform, the company announced on Wednesday.
Among the key updates is the introduction of a repost feature, allowing users to reshare public feed posts and reels from other accounts. Reshared content will appear in a separate "Reposts" tab on the user’s profile, with full credit to the original poster. Instagram says this will help creators reach broader audiences, as reposted content may be recommended to followers of the user sharing it.
Another feature is the Instagram Map, which lets users share their location with selected contacts. The map shows the user’s last active location, and users can control visibility by setting preferences for specific locations or limiting access to certain followers. According to Instagram, this feature is opt-in and can be disabled at any time. Location-based content such as reels, posts, and stories can also be viewed through the map.
In addition, the platform is expanding its "Friends" tab globally. Positioned at the top of the Reels section, the tab displays public content that a user's contacts have liked or commented on. Users can manage their visibility by choosing whether or not to display likes, comments, and reposts. They also have the option to mute interactions from specific accounts.
