WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to mention specific contacts in their status updates, similar to Instagram.

Currently in beta testing, the new update will boost user interaction and engagement within the popular messaging platform.

The mention feature enables users to tag contacts in their status updates, sending a direct notification to the mentioned user. This notification includes an option to reshare the status, making it easier for users to ensure their updates reach specific contacts.

It's worth mentioning that these tags are private. This means that other viewers of the status update won't see who's been mentioned. Only the tagged contact will get a notification and a message in their chat.

Key points of feature:

- Dedicated button in the caption bar to tag contacts

- Mentioned users receive instant notifications and a WhatsApp chat message

- Privacy settings ensure mentions remain private between sender and recipient

- Resharing option with anonymity, hiding the original creator's identity

Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly working on integrating Meta AI with customisable voice options. This feature, expected to roll out soon, will offer various UK and US voices, enhancing user interaction with AI-driven features.
