A case has been registered in Okara district against a middle-aged man suffering from mental illness for allegedly burning pages of the Holy Quran at a mosque in village 55-GD.
According to Noor Shah Police Station SHO Irfan Rasool, the complaint was lodged by a local resident, Mazhar Bashira. He stated that he personally saw the accused burning Quranic pages and immediately informed other villagers.
The police report says the incident occurred after Zuhr prayers at a small, two-room mosque where no permanent imam is appointed, and only a few locals attend. Locals further told authorities that the accused was not a resident of the village and had been staying at the mosque temporarily for a few days.
Several locals reportedly witnessed the incident themselves and gathered at the mosque. One of the eyewitnesses, Shaukat, also verified the incident.
The complainant is said to have recorded a video of the act, which has been submitted to the police as evidence. In the footage, the accused appears mentally unstable and unaware that he is being filmed.
Upon receiving the information, SHO Irfan Rasool reached the mosque, secured the area, and arrested the accused. To prevent any possible mob reaction, the police immediately transferred him to a safe location.
Newly appointed District Police Officer (DPO) Usman Tipu also visited the site, reviewed the recorded evidence, and instructed police to ensure law and order in the area.
The authorities have acknowledged that the accused appears to be mentally ill. According to the DPO, he will undergo a medical examination on Wednesday, after which he will be presented before a judicial magistrate.
