KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Monday opened the Rs6.1 billion Korangi causeway bridge.

The 1.4km-long bridge, constructed over the Malir river and connecting Korangi Industrial Area with the city’s East and South districts, has six lanes – three on each side – and is expected to accommodate almost five million commuters daily.

The chief minister, accompanied by Sindh Local Government (LG) Minister Syed Nasir Shah, Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, arrived at the Korangi causeway, where he was received by Special Assistant Ali Rashid, Secretary LG Waseem Shamshad and others.

Addressing the ceremony, the CM said that the project would immensely benefit the Korangi and Landhi industrial areas, daily commuters, and the adjacent facilities, including the Indus Hospital, educational institutions, and residential areas.

"This area was always disconnected during the rainy season, literally splitting the city into two parts. To overcome this problem, we had committed to constructing a bridge here almost three years ago,” he said.

He said that the bridge is a part of a larger project to restore the ailing infrastructure of Karachi.

He pointed out that some ancillary construction work was still in progress, including the linking of Shahrah-i-Bhutto with Korangi Road. “We are targeting the opening of Shahrah-i-Bhutto by Eid or immediately after that. Though there has been a delay, the road will be opened from Korangi Road to M-9 after Eid,” he said.
