A woman and a young girl were shot and injured after the woman resisted a robbery in Karachi’s Mauripur area on Sunday.
According to police, the suspects fled after snatching a phone and purse from the family. The victims were visiting Hawkes Bay for a picnic when their vehicle broke down on the way.
While waiting for the car to be fixed, the robbers approached and seized their belongings. Upon resistance, the robbers shot the 35-year-old woman and the eight-year-old girl. Both victims were subsequently taken to Civil Hospital Karachi for medical treatment.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza has formed a committee to investigate the incident and demanded an explanation from the deputy superintendent of Mauripur police.
The DIG has also issued a stern warning to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Mauripur, stating that there will be repercussions if the suspects involved in the Hawksbay robbery are not apprehended within a week. “Action will be taken against the SHO if the suspects are not arrested,” he asserted.
This incident is part of a troubling trend in Karachi, where resistance to robberies has led to at least 82 deaths this year.
The Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) reports that 10,323 mobile phones have been snatched in Karachi in the first six months of this year, including 1,433 in June alone. The rise in such crimes underscores the urgent need for effective law enforcement and public safety measures in the city.
