A professor of Federal Urdu University of Science and Technology has been terminated by the Federal Ombudsman for the Prevention of Harassment after being found guilty of harassing a female lecturer.

According to media reports on Monday, the decision followed a complaint lodged by the victim, with the Ombudsman ruling in her favor and mandating the professor's dismissal.

Furthermore, the professor has been imposed a fine of Rs. 1 million. Information regarding the university, the identity of the professor, and other pertinent details has not yet been made public.

The Constitution of Pakistan, 1973, enshrines the fundamental right to personal dignity, recognizing it as a crucial element of human rights.

It establishes a legal framework designed to protect individuals from actions that may infringe upon their inherent dignity, highlighting the state's obligation to foster an environment devoid of exploitation, discrimination, and abuse.

These constitutional provisions serve as the basis for promoting respect and equality among all citizens, particularly in addressing societal issues related to harassment and misconduct in both public and private domains.

To further strengthen these protections, the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010 (Act IV of 2010), was enacted. This significant legislation seeks to cultivate a safe and inclusive work environment by instituting mechanisms for the effective prevention and resolution of harassment cases.

It requires the formation of inquiry committees within workplaces, delineates penalties for offenders, and provides safeguards for victims to report harassment without fear of retaliation.
