Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has inducted modern heavy vehicles in its fleet, with funds raised through the auctioning of old vehicles.
Speaking during the induction ceremony for these vehicles, which took place at the head office of the KMC on Thursday, Mayor Murtaza Wahab referred to this as an important milestone for improving efficiency and municipal service delivery.
He stated that the procurement of these vehicles was carried out by funding through the proceeds gained from the auctioning of old vehicles, with an allocation of Rs110 million for the procurement of heavy vehicles, including mount trucks.
The mayor formally handed over the vehicles to the Engineering Department, Anti-Encroachment Department, Parks Department, and Veterinary Department.
"Upon approval by the City Council, it was decided to auction unused as well as scrapped items," he said. "This resulted in the generation of Rs227 million. On the back of these proceeds, we were able to buy five new heavy vehicles. Two vehicles have been allocated to the E&M Department, one to the Anti-Encroachment Department, one to the Parks Department, and another to the Veterinary Department," stated the mayor.
Wahab also added , “Inducting vehicles is a move that will aid in improving the services. In addition, he revealed that five more vehicles are to be procured for different departments, as well as the repair of five buses, which has also been completed.
Accompanied by the Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Jaman Darwan, and officers of KMC, the Mayor stated that his KMC was incurring costs for the upgrading of civic amenities on its own resources. The revenue of KMC, he explained, had been enhanced through a positive approach. Resources were being used effectively.
“The KMC now has resources to work on many developmental projects at one time, ranging from local streets to large-scale projects,” he said, and added, “The new heavy vehicles would be very helpful in field operations, and would speed up the entire process of removing encroachments in the city, and would even further enhance efforts regarding park and beautification operations.”
