An application for a petition has already been placed before the Lahore High Court against the proposed construction of restaurants over the canal.

The constitutional petition was filed by Ejaz Anwar and others, who nominated the Punjab Government, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), and other concerned parties.

According to the petition, the operation of the canal for commercial purposes is violation of the Environmental Protection Laws and the Preservation of the Heritage Rules. It is stated that the proposed construction of floating restaurants may affect the water flow of the canal. The canal is a “historical and cultural heritage of Lahore.

The petition further alleges: “The construction of floating restaurants on the Lahore canal is increasing the level of environmental pollution, and it may result in encroachments and illegal construction on the sides of the canal.” The petitioners have sought an immediate order from the court for stopping the construction of floating restaurants.
