PIMS tragedy: Bodies of 14 newborns handed over to families amid calls for DNA identification

Islamabad: The bodies of 14 newborn babies who died in the PIMS Hospital tragedy have been handed over to their families.

A fire broke out in the nursery of the gynaecology ward at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on Wednesday morning, killing 14 newborn babies.

According to rescue officials, the fire started at around 6:45 a.m. after an air-conditioning compressor exploded in the hospital’s nursery.

Hospital authorities said that 15 babies were present in the nursery when the fire broke out.

A female doctor managed to rescue only one baby, while the remaining 14 newborns died in the incident.

The bodies of the 14 babies who died in the PIMS Hospital tragedy were subsequently handed over to their families.

During the process, some relatives staged a protest and demanded DNA testing to establish the identities of the babies.

The bereaved families alleged that the bodies had been handed over to them without proper identification.
