Like other parts of Karachi, residents of Urdu Nagar in Malir are also suffering due to severe waterlogging and deteriorating infrastructure issues in the area.
Speaking to Dialogue Pakistan under its series of Karachi Aisa Nahi Tha, residents reported that stagnant water has remained on the streets for over a month and a half, creating significant difficulties for the community.
According to locals, drainage lines frequently become blocked, causing wastewater to accumulate and damage roads. Despite visits by municipal teams, the issue has yet to be resolved.
A local resident stated that the situation has severely affected nearby schools, with access routes submerged in dirty water. Business activities have also suffered considerably, with traders reporting a significant decline in sales due to the poor conditions.
Residents further highlighted the lack of basic services, including electricity, gas and a reliable water supply. The stagnant water has led to a rise in mosquito infestations, raising concerns about public health and increasing the risk of disease among local families and children.
Community members noted that the affected road serves a school, a market and nearby residential areas. Students, worshippers, women and elderly residents face daily difficulties while travelling through the area. In some instances, even funeral processions have struggled to pass through the flooded streets.
Locals have urged the authorities to improve drainage infrastructure, clear blocked sewer lines, repair damaged roads and maintain cleanliness in the area. They also expressed concern about a nearby waste disposal site, which they believe is contributing to unsanitary conditions and the spread of mosquitoes.
