Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa has revealed that financial considerations played a key role in his decision to opt out of the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that he was not a priority pick for franchises and that the compensation on offer did not justify the time commitment.
Speaking in a recent interview, Zampa said the disparity in earnings for players with different skill sets influenced his decision. “To be brutally honest, for someone with my skill set, the money just isn’t there compared to what’s available for other skill sets,” he said, adding that the lengthy duration of the tournament made participation less appealing under the circumstances.
The 34-year-old had initially planned to take a break from cricket but was presented with a late opportunity to feature in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He was subsequently drafted by Karachi Kings and has since contributed to the side.
Zampa said the move to the PSL happened quickly but described his experience in the tournament as positive. He also highlighted the competitive standard of teams, noting that several sides possess bowling attacks comparable to international level.
Reflecting on a recent fixture, he said the quality of opposition was evident, particularly in a closely contested chase, which underscored the depth of talent in the league.
