In a historic milestone for Pakistani women’s boxing, British-born Pakistani boxer Laura Akram has secured Pakistan’s first-ever women’s elite boxing medal at the global level.

Competing in the ongoing World Boxing Challenge (Grand Prix Ústí nad Labem) in the Czech Republic, Laura Akram triumphed over Palestine’s Nora Salman with a unanimous 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals and securing at least a bronze medal.

The 39-year-old, who began representing Pakistan internationally in 2023, has etched her name in the country’s sporting history within just a few months. Her remarkable performance in the 57 kg featherweight category has not only brought home a historic medal but has also reignited hope and enthusiasm for women’s boxing in Pakistan.

In Olympic-style tournaments, all semifinalists are awarded at least a bronze medal. However, Laura’s journey isn’t over yet. She is now set to face Mongolia’s Macheda Ardini Dalai in the semifinals, with the winner advancing to the final to compete for gold or silver.

Laura’s achievement is a breakthrough moment for women’s sports in Pakistan, a space often hindered by limited resources and recognition. Her rise on the international stage has not only uplifted national morale but also proudly raised Pakistan’s flag in the boxing world.

Following the World Boxing Challenge, Laura will gear up for the World Boxing Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, scheduled from June 30 to July 6. Her ultimate goal remains the World Championships in Liverpool in 2025.

This year’s edition of the Grand Prix marks its 100th anniversary and, for the second year in a row, holds the prestigious title of “World Boxing Challenge.” The tournament features 184 boxers from 23 countries, serving as a crucial test ahead of next year’s championships.
