Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali’s former wife to build sports stadium in Afghanistan

A former wife of legendary US boxer Muhammad Ali recently visited Afghanistan and announced a stadium in the country, where women are banned from participating in sports. 

Taliban government’s chief of sports directorate, Ahmadullah Wasiq, told the media that Muhammad Ali’s ex-spouse, Khalilah Camacho-Ali, was in Kabul to establish a stadium and a sports association named after Muhammad Ali. 

The stadium will be named “Pirozi” (victory in Dari).

Camacho-Ali was born in the US in 1950. She married Muhammad Ali and the couple converted to Islam after their marriage.

Their union lasted a decade until 1976. Khalilah is an actor, author, and martial artist.

The iconic American boxer went to Kabul in 2002 as a United Nations peace ambassador, following the ouster of the first Taliban government by the US military.

Muhammad Ali died in 2016. He is remembered for championing the cause of African American civil rights.

As Kabul is set to get a sports stadium, the Taliban government has imposed a ban on the education of girls above the sixth grade. Women are also barred from attending universities or participating in sports.

The authorities have also recently declared martial arts as un-Islamic and previously carried out executions in sports stadiums.
