Colombo: In the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, New Zealand national cricket team defeated Sri Lanka national cricket team by a commanding 61 runs, making Pakistan’s path to the semi-finals increasingly difficult.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to field. New Zealand posted 168 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Mitchell Santner top-scored with 47, while McConchie added 31 runs.

In reply, Sri Lanka struggled throughout their innings and were restricted to 107 for 8 in 20 overs, handing the Black Caps a comprehensive victory.

The defeat marked Sri Lanka’s second consecutive loss, effectively ending their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. It also dealt a blow to Pakistan’s chances of progressing.

Following the win, New Zealand’s net run rate improved to +3.05, while Pakistan national cricket team sit at -0.46.

New Zealand will face England cricket team in their final group match on Friday, while Pakistan are due to play Sri Lanka on Saturday.

If New Zealand lose to England, Pakistan will retain a slim chance — but they would still need a convincing win over Sri Lanka to stand any realistic prospect of qualification.

However, should New Zealand defeat England, Pakistan will be eliminated even before taking the field in their final fixture.

England have already secured qualification for the semi-finals from this group.
