Pakistan has been eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024 following the abandonment of the match between the United States (USA) and Ireland in Lauderhill, Florida, due to rain.
The match in Lauderhill was called off after heavy morning rains altered the outfield and left numerous wet patches. During the fourth inspection, rain resumed, ultimately ending Pakistan's chances of advancing to the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup.
As the match was abandoned without a single ball being bowled, both the USA and Ireland were awarded one point each. This result allowed the USA to progress to the Super 8, as they now have five points, a tally Pakistan can no longer match.
The USA secured victories against Canada and Pakistan in their first two matches of the World Cup, whereas Pakistan suffered defeats against the hosts and India. Although Pakistan has one remaining match against Ireland, it will be a dead rubber, as they are already out of the tournament.
In the previous two editions of the T20 World Cup, Pakistan reached the semi-final in 2021, where they lost to Australia, and in 2022, despite a poor start, they advanced to the final but were defeated by England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Historically, Pakistan has been successful in reaching the T20 World Cup semi-finals, having done so six times in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2021, and 2022, more than any other team. This year marks their first group-stage exit since 2016 and only their third overall.
