Karachi police launched on Monday an investigation into threats allegedly extended to boxer Aliya Soomro.
Soomro, who made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a world boxing title, posted a video on Instagram a day earlier, saying she and her family were being harassed by a man allegedly affiliated with the Lyari gang war, who was posing as a media professional.
“Don’t drag me into political and ethnic disputes and conflict between boxing institutions. Why is the entire machinery being used against me? My family and I are facing life threats,” she stated.
Soomro accused unnamed individuals of “spreading unfounded information” about her and said she feared for her safety. She called on the Sindh police chief and other authorities to provide her with protection and legal support.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Syed Asad Raza took notice of the matter and instructed City Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Arif Aziz to carry out a full investigation and pursue legal action against those responsible, according to a statement.
“South Zone Police contacted Alia Soomro and assured her of full cooperation,” the statement noted.
DIG Raza also expressed support for the boxer, saying, “Boxer Aliya Soomro is a representative and a shining example of the courageous women of Pakistan. Women have the right to move forward in every field of life. The police will provide all possible protection to Aliya Soomro.”
Soomro had secured the WBA Asia 105-pound category championship by knocking out her Thai opponent in just 45 seconds during a match in Bangkok.
The Sindh government recently announced a sponsorship of Rs4.7 million to support Soomro’s participation in an upcoming tournament in Dubai this August, where she is scheduled to compete against an Indian opponent.
