The Football Association of England (FA) has confirmed that it received guarantees from Saudi Arabia regarding the safety and welcome of LGBTQ fans during the 2034 World Cup.
The clarification supports the Gulf nation's successful bid, as stated in an official announcement made last week.
Debbie Hewitt, the chair of the FA, remarked that the choice to endorse Saudi Arabia's bid was "not difficult," citing the organizers' numerous significant commitments.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Hewitt explained that the FA posed "many questions" prior to their endorsement of the bid. "It was not a challenging decision – it was a comprehensive process," she noted.
"We inquired extensively, and they provided ample time and commitments. The crucial aspect is that we will collaborate with them over the next decade leading up to the tournament to ensure that these commitments are fulfilled by both parties," Hewitt added.
Last month, the FA convened with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) to delve deeper into the bid. They expressed confidence in the SAFF's dedication to creating a secure environment for all fans, including those from the LGBTQ+ community.
"We were reassured by the responses we received and believe this is about establishing a partnership," Hewitt stated, highlighting that the FA would assist organizers in identifying the appropriate groups for consultation.
FIFA announced last week that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 Men’s FIFA World Cup, following a bid that encountered no opposition and was approved by FIFA’s Congress during a virtual meeting.
