Saudi Arabia to build sky high stadium ahead of 2034 FIFA World Cup

Saudi Arabia is set to unveil a stadium perched 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level on top of a skyscraper as part of its preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Unofficial reports suggest the kingdom plans to construct at least 15 state of the art stadiums before the high profile tournament.

Early glimpses of the project surfaced on social media, showcasing the stadium atop a skyscraper, leaving viewers in awe. Some, however, raised questions about the safety and engineering challenges of such an ambitious structure.

According to Construction Review magazine, construction of the skyscraper stadium is scheduled to begin in 2027 and conclude by 2032. The stadium will be part of the futuristic NEOM city, The Line, and visitors will be able to access it via high-speed lifts and driverless vehicles.

In addition, the King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh, with a capacity of 92,760, is expected to be completed by 2029. Located on a clifftop, it will host the opening and final matches of the tournament.

The ambitious stadium plans are part of Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to position itself as a global leader in sports, providing world-class infrastructure for the 48-team World Cup.

The kingdom will be the first country to host the tournament entirely on its own. Strategically located just an eight-hour flight from 60% of the global population, Saudi Arabia is expected to welcome a huge number of international visitors.
