Iraq midfielder Zidane Iqbal became the first player of Pakistani heritage to feature in a men's FIFA World Cup after appearing in his side's opening match of the 2026 tournament.
The 23-year-old came on as a substitute in the 59th minute of Iraq's Group I encounter against Norway at Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Monday. Iraq went on to suffer a 4-1 defeat, with Norway striker Erling Haaland scoring twice on his World Cup debut.
Iqbal, a former Manchester United player, is eligible through both his Pakistani and Iraqi heritage. His father is from Pakistan while his mother is Iraqi.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Iqbal said he was unaware of the milestone until he saw it highlighted on social media and immediately shared the news with his father.
"To be honest, I didn't even know it myself," he said. "I followed the account that posted it and sent it to my dad straight away. I think we were both surprised."
He added that his father had played a significant role in his football career and said he holds great respect for his Pakistani roots.
"My dad is Pakistani. He's my father, the man I respect the most in my life, who helped me so much in my career," Iqbal said.
