An 18-year-old British Pakistani, Zeeshan Afzal, has died following a knife attack outside a mosque in Smethwick, near Birmingham. Two other young men were injured in the incident, police have confirmed.

The tragic incident occurred at around 9pm on Friday on Oldbury Road, outside a Jamia Mosque in Smethwick.

According to reports, Zeeshan Afzal was stabbed during a dispute and sustained critical injuries. Police officers and paramedics attended the scene promptly and attempted to provide life-saving treatment. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Two other men, aged 19 and 22, were also injured in the altercation. They were taken to hospital, where doctors have stated that their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

West Midlands Police has launched a full investigation and increased security presence in the area to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible

A police spokesperson said officers are supporting Zeeshan’s family during this extremely difficult time and will provide them with all necessary assistance.

Preliminary investigations have found no evidence at this stage to suggest that the attack was religiously or racially motivated. Police are currently treating it as a dispute that escalated into fatal violence.

The incident has caused distress within the local community, particularly as it occurred during a time of worship.

Authorities have urged members of the public to share any relevant information, including mobile phone footage or dashcam recordings. An online portal has been set up to facilitate submissions.
