A Mexican Navy training vessel collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City late Saturday, causing significant structural damage to the ship and injuring at least 22 people, according to officials.

The Cuauhtémoc, a tall ship used for naval training, struck the bridge while attempting to pass underneath it, resulting in all three of its masts snapping and falling into the East River. The incident occurred as crowds watched the vessel, which was illuminated with decorative lights and had its sails furled.

In a statement, the Mexican Navy confirmed that 22 people aboard were injured, with three in critical condition. No one fell overboard, and rescue operations were not required.

Multiple U.S. media outlets reported that around 200 individuals were on board the Cuauhtémoc at the time of the incident. Some reports suggested crew members may have been in the rigging when the masts were torn off, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Built in 1982, the Cuauhtémoc has a mast height of 48.2 meters (158 feet). The vessel was reportedly engaged in a routine training exercise when the collision occurred.

The Mexican Navy stated it is committed to ensuring the safety of its personnel and maintaining transparency and excellence in officer training.

An investigation into the cause of the collision is expected.
