A man attempting to unlawfully enter President Donald Trump’s private residence, Mar-a-Lago, in the state of Florida was shot dead by the US Secret Service, according to American media reports.
The Secret Service stated that the suspect was carrying a shotgun and a fuel can at the time of the incident.
Speaking at a press conference, Ric Bradshaw, Sheriff of Palm Beach County, said two Secret Service agents and one sheriff’s deputy confronted the individual and ordered him to drop his weapon and the fuel container.
The sheriff said the man placed the petrol can on the ground but raised the shotgun into a firing position, prompting officers to open fire. The suspect was killed at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
According to reports, President Trump was in Washington, D.C. at the time and was not present at the resort.
Authorities have not immediately disclosed a motive. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken charge of the investigation and is collecting evidence from the scene.
Trump also survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.
The gunman fired eight shots before being stopped by a Secret Service sniper while a defiant Trump raised his fist to the crowd.
The incident — and especially his survival — was considered decisive in the course of the election.
