A baby girl, who was rescued from the womb of her dead mother in Gaza, passed away on Friday after days in an incubator.
The Palestinian woman, Sabreen Al-Sakani, was killed along with her husband and their 4-year-old daughter in an Israeli airstrike at their home in Rafah on April 20.
The family was among the 2.3 million seeking refuge amidst a relentless military offensive in Rafah. Their bodies were transported to a Rafah hospital, where paramedics discovered that the deceased woman was 30 weeks pregnant.
The baby girl was delivered by C-section, weighing only 1.4 kg (3.09 lb).
According to doctors, the baby girl was in stable condition and was showing steady improvement.
However, the baby suffered respiratory problems and a weak immune system, resulting in the death of the four-day-old Sabreen al-Rouh Jouda.
"I and other doctors tried to save her, but she died. For me personally, it was a very difficult and painful day," Doctor Mohammad Salama, who was taking care of the infant, told Reuters.
The relentless military strikes have killed more than 34,000 people, most of whom are women and children, and displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza.
