The Meteorological Department has said that a monsoon system over the Arabian Sea will continue to bring intermittent showers to Karachi, with moderate rainfall expected today (Tuesday). The city received heavy rain earlier in the day.
Rain was reported in several parts of the city, including Sharea Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, Airport, Model Colony, II Chundrigar Road, Defence, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, and surrounding areas.
The downpour made the weather pleasant but also caused significant disruption.
Urban flooding like situations were reported in North Nazimabad blocks, Nagan Chowrangi, Dalmia, and other low-lying areas where roads were submerged.
The early morning rain coincided with office and school timings, creating traffic jams and water accumulation on major thoroughfares.
Weather experts had predicted moderate showers with thunderstorms in Karachi, warning that heavier rainfall was expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah has directed the administration to remain on high alert in view of the ongoing monsoon spell across the province, particularly in Karachi.
He instructed deputy commissioners to stay in the field with their teams and ensure immediate drainage of rainwater.
The Chief Secretary also directed K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO to ensure uninterrupted power supply, while urging district authorities to maintain constant coordination with the Meteorological Department and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Intermittent showers on Monday led to power outages in multiple neighborhoods of Karachi after 350 feeders tripped, according to a K-Electric spokesperson. The affected areas included the Old City Area, Saddar, Garden, Nazimabad, and parts of Korangi.
The spokesperson, however, assured that the utility’s distribution network remained stable, with more than 1,750 out of 2,100 feeders supplying electricity without interruption.
Power in some low-lying areas was temporarily shut down as a safety precaution. K-Electric said its teams were actively monitoring the situation, urging residents to report emergencies via the 118 helpline, social media platforms, KE WhatsApp service, or the KE Live app.
Meteorologists have advised residents to avoid going outdoors during severe thunderstorms and to use mobile phones only for emergency calls. Citizens on roads were also cautioned to stay away from trees, fences, and poles, which are vulnerable to lightning strikes.
