Bangladesh will once again include the phrase “Except Israel” on newly issued passports, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said, describing the decision as aligned with government policy and public sentiment.

Speaking to journalists at a dialogue organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum at the Secretariat media centre, he confirmed that the restriction would be reinstated in future passport issuance.

He also said the government plans to redesign passports and visa pages to better reflect Bangladesh’s cultural identity, heritage, and natural landmarks.

According to him, previous passport designs had overly individual-focused elements that did not properly represent the country. The new version, he said, will instead highlight national heritage and tourism sites.

He mentioned places such as the National Martyrs’ Memorial, Tanguar Haor, and Cox’s Bazar as examples that could be featured in the updated design.

Salahuddin Ahmed also noted that discussions were underway regarding the possible inclusion of images of the Bir Shreshthas on currency notes, although that decision would fall under the Ministry of Finance.

He added that the redesign process would avoid political messaging and instead focus on portraying Bangladesh’s history, culture, and people.
