In WASHINGTON, three top Democratic leaders are pushing their fellow US Senators to stop President Donald Trump from waging war against Iran solo. Thursday saw Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar release a statement.

They pointed out that the House had already passed a War Powers Resolution on Wednesday.

Their statement pressed Republican lawmakers to follow suit, saying the war with Iran has been going on for more than 90 days. The US law states that the President must ask for Congress’ okay if military action goes past that time frame.

This legislative push continues to move through the Senate. Here, lawmakers need to figure out if they'll debate and vote on a matching bill or adopt the version the House already green-lit.

For context, this move fits into Congress's larger efforts under the War Powers Resolution. This law lets them step in and set limits on military ops when no explicit permission was asked for ahead of time.
