Israeli police have arrested an anti-government activist on suspicion of conspiring to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The woman in her 70s allegedly expressed her intent to kill the Israeli prime minister and spoke with other protesters about acquiring weapons and information about his security arrangements, the police said in a statement.

The National Unit for Serious and International Crime Investigations is conducting the investigation in coordination with the Shin Bet internal security agency. The findings have been submitted to the State Attorney’s Office for consideration of possible formal charges.

The woman recently became unwell and was heard telling others that she intended to “take Netanyahu with her”, Israeli daily Haaretz reported, citing sources familiar with the case.

Those who overheard the comments alerted police and the investigation was launched. The woman, who has not been named, was arrested around six weeks ago and is currently under house arrest.

Haaretz in its report said that she is from Tel Aviv and is suspected of having considered using an explosive device or a rocket-propelled grenade in a potential attack.

Police have not disclosed further details about the case, and there has been no official response from the prime minister’s office.
