The Palestinian group Hamas has reportedly accepted a ceasefire proposal for Gaza, presented by US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff, according to a Palestinian source speaking to Anadolu Agency on Monday.
“Hamas has agreed to the Witkoff ceasefire proposal to serve the interest of our people and halt the ongoing genocide,” said the unnamed source, who requested anonymity due to security concerns.
Details of the proposed ceasefire have not been made public, and no official statement has been issued by Hamas leadership or the US government confirming the agreement. The acceptance, if confirmed, would mark a significant development in ongoing diplomatic efforts to halt months of deadly conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The alleged agreement comes amid escalating violence in the region, with the Israeli military continuing operations in Gaza. On the same day the news surfaced, Israeli forces reportedly targeted evacuated buildings within the enclave, raising further concerns about civilian safety and the feasibility of any near-term ceasefire.
Despite the reported breakthrough, confusion remains. Axios later reported that the US envoy denied any formal acceptance of the proposal by Hamas, suggesting discrepancies between various sources involved in the negotiations.
