India is in talks with the UAE over a potential sale of its key defence systems, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Reuters reports, citing sources.

The report said the talks also include the possible export of the Akashteer air defence system, as the Gulf nation looks to expand its military procurement following recent tensions in the Middle East.

Citing one source, it said that the UAE has shown interest in several Indian weapons systems, including BrahMos and Akashteer, adding that the negotiations are still at an early stage but are moving forward quickly.

The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is among the world’s fastest cruise missiles and can be launched from land, sea and air platforms. Akashteer is an automated air defence system developed by India’s Bharat Electronics Ltd in coordination with the Indian Army.

The UAE is reportedly expanding its defence procurement options after coming under attack during regional conflict and amid concerns over protecting key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, a major energy export corridor.
