Iran’s military command has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all vessels, including oil tankers and commercial shipping, in a statement carried by Iranian state media outlet Mehr News Agency.
The announcement warned that any vessel attempting to pass through the strategic waterway would be targeted, citing heightened insecurity in the region.
However, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has rejected the claim, stating that no closure has taken place and that commercial shipping continues to transit the Strait of Hormuz despite Iran’s warnings.
Iranian state and affiliated media also reported explosions in several cities, including Bandar Abbas, Minab, Karaj, and areas near the Strait, though these claims have not been independently verified.
The reports come amid ongoing exchanges of attacks between Iran and the United States in recent days, further intensifying regional tensions.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said military action in the region is aimed at advancing US strategic interests and strengthening diplomatic leverage, adding that Washington remains open to negotiations but is prepared to respond with force if necessary.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has not issued detailed comments on the latest Iranian claims. The situation remains fluid, with conflicting statements from both sides and no independent confirmation of a full closure of the waterway.
