Mir Raza case: Jibran Nasir accuses police of concealing evidence to support suicide narrative

KARACHI: Lawyer and human rights activist Jibran Nasir has raised serious questions over the police investigation into the death of Mir Raza, alleging that key evidence was concealed and the crime scene was manipulated to support a suicide narrative.

Mir Raza went missing on July 28, and his body was found in Gulistan-e-Jauhar the following day. Police initially described his death as a suicide, but a second post-mortem examination concluded that he had been murdered.

In a statement shared on social media, Nasir claimed that a bullet casing discovered nine days after Raza’s body was found did not match the empty casings recorded by police for the pistol belonging to a security company.

According to Nasir, two empty casings from the weapon had been deposited with the police when the pistol was issued to Bright Security, as required under the law.

He alleged that although police were aware of the discrepancy, the development was not disclosed to the Sindh High Court.

Nasir further alleged that the location where Raza’s body was discovered was subsequently burnt under the pretext of helping investigators locate the bullet casing.

He claimed that when the casing was recovered, at least four SHOs from different police stations were present at the scene.

The lawyer alleged that the crime scene was subsequently manipulated and accused those involved of planting a dummy bullet casing to strengthen the theory that Raza had died by suicide.

Nasir also criticised the Sindh government for allegedly resisting calls for action against the police officers involved and for refusing to constitute a Joint Investigation Team (JIT).

He said Raza’s family had been raising questions about the conduct of the police since the beginning and argued that the family should not be forced to rely solely on the same police force whose investigation they have questioned.
