US President Donald Trump has indicated that Pakistan is the preferred venue for the next round of negotiations with Iran, while praising the performance of Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Speaking to a reporter from the New York Post, Trump suggested that developments could take place within the next two days and said the United States was inclined towards holding talks in Pakistan.

He noted that Pakistan was a likely choice for negotiations, stating that the Field Marshal was “doing an excellent job”.

Trump added that it was due to Asim Munir’s performance that Washington is considering returning to Pakistan for further talks.

The president also indicated he was not pleased with reports that the US had asked Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program for at least two decades during this past weekend’s unsuccessful talks.

“I’ve been saying they can’t have nuclear weapons” he said, “so I don’t like the 20 years.”

Asked about proponents suggesting a moratorium may encourage Iran make an agreement, Trump answered: “I don’t want them [Iran] to feel like they have a win.”

Retired Pakistani Lt. Gen. Muhammad Saeed, involved in arranging the talks, claimed Tehran has shown “flexibility” on the explosive issue of uranium enrichment — a key sticking point that has long derailed diplomacy.
