Israel’s UN envoy demanded the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to impose "all possible sanctions on Iran before it's too late" during the emergency meeting on Sunday.
The UNSC emergency session was convened at Israel’s request following Iran’s missile attacks on April 13.
“It’s vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrotnations on multiple fronts in the Middle East,” the UN secretary general António Guterres cautioned against further escalation in the aftermath of Iran’s attacks on Israel.
"Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” he addressed the Security Council during its session convened to discuss the Iranian attack that took place on Saturday.
Iran’s representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, maintained that the Islamic republic was utilising its "inherent right to self-defense" and emphasised that it felt compelled to take action.
He reiterated that Iran did not desire escalation or conflict but would retaliate against any potential threats or acts of aggression.
The US envoy condemned Iran’s attack and unequivocally endorsed Israel’s right to self defence. He issued a warning, stating , “If Iran or its proxies take action against the United States or further actions against Israel, Iran will be held responsible”
Representatives from for Iran, Syria, Russia and China denounced the support provided by the USand other countries in shooting down the drones and missiles directed towards Israel.
The envoys also criticised the Security Council for its failure to condemn Israel’s attack on an Iranian diplomatic compound on April 1.
The strike resulted in the deaths of seven members of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and prompted Tehran to launch its first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory with more than 300 missiles and drones on April 13.
