Israeli authorities said that 430 activists on the Global Sumud Flotilla that was going to Gaza are being taken to Israel. This happened after their boats were stopped in the Mediterranean Sea. The Global Sumud Flotilla had sailed from Turkey a week ago. It was trying to show that Israels blockade on Gaza is not right and to get people around the world to notice the dire situation in Gaza.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry described the mission as a “PR stunt” and accused organisers of supporting Hamas, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the interception, saying the blockade would remain in place. Israeli officials said the activists would be allowed access to consular representatives upon arrival.
Organisers and several participating countries condemned the operation, saying the flotilla was a peaceful humanitarian mission carrying activists, journalists, and aid supporters from dozens of countries. Pakistan joined nine other nations, including Turkey, Spain, Indonesia, and Brazil, in a joint statement condemning the interception and calling Israel’s actions unacceptable.
Indonesia confirmed that nine of its citizens aboard the flotilla had been detained and urged Israel to release all vessels and crew members immediately. Turkey and Spain also criticised the operation.
The flotilla is the latest in a series of attempts to breach the blockade on Gaza, where shortages of food, medicine, and essential supplies have intensified during the ongoing conflict. Previous flotilla missions were similarly intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters.
