BEIRUT: Israeli forces reportedly fired on three United Nations (UN) peacekeeper positions in southern Lebanon on Thursday, according to a UN source.
The source, while unable to specify the nature of the fire, confirmed that one of the locations targeted was the main base of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at Naqoura.
So far, there has been no official statement from UNIFIL nor any immediate comment from the Israeli military regarding the incident.
Earlier in the day, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for targeting an Israeli tank with guided missiles as it advanced toward the Ras al-Naqoura border area.
Following this, Hezbollah launched another missile salvo at Israeli forces attempting to evacuate injured soldiers from the scene.
On Sunday, UNIFIL expressed "deep concern" over Israeli military activities near one of its peacekeeper positions in southwestern Lebanon, warning that such actions endangered peacekeepers and were "unacceptable" in compromising their ability to carry out their UN Security Council-mandated duties.
