In a closed-door meeting on Tuesday, Jordan's King Abdullah II and US President Donald Trump discussed the reconstruction of Gaza and the fate of Palestinians in the enclave. Despite Trump’s insistence, the Jordanian leader refrained from endorsing his controversial plan.

The meeting was closely watched, as Trump’s post-ceasefire plans for Gaza sparked global debate, particularly among Arab nations.

King Abdullah II was the first Arab leader to meet Trump after he assumed office. The Jordanian monarch arrived at the Oval Office alongside Crown Prince Hussein.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, King Abdullah stated that Egypt would present a proposal on how regional countries could cooperate on Trump’s Gaza reconstruction plan.

“The president is looking at Egypt coming to present that plan... (then) we will be in Saudi Arabia to discuss how we should work with the president and with the United States,” King Abdullah said.

He further stated, “I think one of the things that we can do right away is take 2,000 children, cancer children who are in a very ill state, that is possible.”

Trump hailed King Abdullah’s initiative for Palestinian children as a “beautiful gesture.”

The US president, however, reaffirmed his commitment to his Gaza plan, stating, “The US is going to have Gaza, we don’t have to buy it,” while sitting with King Abdullah II.

Meanwhile, Arab and Muslim nations are set to convene an emergency OIC meeting on Gaza in Cairo on February 27.
