Mossad removes two senior officers after failed Iran regime change operation

Israeli intelligence agency Mossad’s new chief, Roman Gofman, has removed two senior officials from their positions over their alleged connection with a reported failed plan to bring about a change of government in Iran, according to Israeli media reports.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, the two officials played a central role in developing the plan and preparing its operational strategy.

One of the officials had been heading Mossad’s Intelligence Directorate since last December, while the other was leading the agency’s Iran division.

Channel 12 reported that the two officials had prepared a written operational plan aimed at overthrowing Iran’s Islamic government.

The reported strategy involved reviving an anti-government movement with the support of Iran’s ethnic and linguistic minorities, particularly Kurdish groups, and triggering nationwide protests to challenge the government.

The report claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also considered the plan, and that it was discussed during efforts in February to persuade former US President Donald Trump to take military action against Iran.

Channel 12, citing security sources, reported that disagreements existed between Mossad chief Roman Gofman and the two senior officials from the beginning.

The sources said the officials were not dismissed but were moved from their positions by mutual agreement. They are expected to receive other responsibilities within Mossad as part of wider organizational reforms.
