Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has asked Muslims across the Kingdom to look for the Ramazan crescent on the evening of Tuesday, February 17.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the court urged anyone who sights the moon — either with the naked eye or using binoculars — to report to the nearest court and formally record their testimony. People may also contact the closest assistance centre to help them reach the court.

Ramazan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds special religious significance for Muslims worldwide.

Subject to the moon sighting, the holy month is likely to begin on either February 18 or February 19.

During Ramazan, Muslims observe a daily fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking and other physical needs. The fast is traditionally broken at sunset with Iftar, while the pre-dawn meal is known as Suhoor.

Across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, working hours are typically reduced for most government employees and many in the private sector during the holy month.
