In Newark, New Jersey, the Imam of Masjid-Muhammad-Newark, Hassan Sharif, was fatally shot in the early hours of Wednesday by an unknown assailant who remains at large.

Authorities at a news conference stated that the killing is not believed to be driven by domestic terrorism or bias.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin revealed preliminary findings, emphasizing the absence of bias motivation.

Despite the usual discretion in ongoing investigations, concerns over rising prejudice prompted disclosure.

Governor Phil Murphy released a statement asking for anyone with information to come forward.

"I want to assure the Muslim community and people of all faiths that we will do everything in our power to keep all residents safe, especially in or near our houses of worship," he said.

A $25,000 (£19,000) reward was announced for details on the shooting. Neighbors suggested a connection to local crime issues.

Sharif, a transportation security officer at Newark Liberty International Airport, was esteemed in both his roles.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations expressed devastation, highlighting him as "a beacon of leadership and excellence."

Senator Cory Booker conveyed heartbreak and solidarity, emphasizing Sharif's positive character. Community members echoed these sentiments, describing Sharif as a genuinely good person.
