Nine people remain in critical condition following a fatal train collision near Bedford, approximately 100 kilometres north of London, on Friday. The accident claimed the life of one train driver and left dozens injured.

The crash occurred at around 5:15 p.m. local time (1615 GMT) when two passenger trains heading toward London collided. Emergency responders confirmed that the driver of one of the trains died at the scene.

British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said on Saturday that more than 80 people received hospital treatment after the incident. Of those, 28 remained hospitalized, including nine who were in critical condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Footage shared on social media by a passenger appeared to show the damaged front section of one train lodged into the rear of the other, although both trains remained upright after the impact.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the crash as a “devastating incident” in a post on X, expressing his concern for those affected.

Buckingham Palace also released a statement on behalf of King Charles, saying the monarch was deeply saddened by the tragedy and was receiving regular updates on the situation. The statement added that the King’s thoughts and sympathies were with the family of the deceased, as well as all those injured or affected by the accident.
