Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has shared details of a brief and cordial exchange he had with US President Donald Trump while signing 'Board of Peace' charter in Davos.

According to a newspaper report, the prime minister said that President Trump asked him, “How is my favourite Field Marshal?” In response, Shehbaz pointed towards Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who was seated in the front row at the ceremony.

Television footage aired globally showed both leaders gesturing towards the field marshal during the signing ceremony of the Board of Peace, an initiative launched by Trump.

The prime minister said he used the opportunity to praise the US president for forming the Board of Peace, particularly in the context of Gaza. He described the initiative as a meaningful step towards stability in the conflict-hit region.

“I told President Trump that if he manages to bring peace, dignity and fundamental rights to the Palestinian people, and if Gaza is rebuilt successfully, this effort will be remembered as a major part of his legacy,” the report quoted PM Shehbaz as saying.

Recalling past developments, the prime minister also expressed appreciation for Trump’s role in easing tensions between Pakistan and India. He said he told the US president that his timely intervention had helped avert a wider conflict in the region.

“History will remember you as a leader who saved millions of lives through decisive and effective action,” Shehbaz quoted himself as telling Trump.
