Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday.
Rahman’s ascent follows a decisive victory for his party in the nationwide elections held on February 12 — the first polls since the 2024 mass uprising that led to the removal of long-time leader Sheikh Hasina and the formation of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
The BNP secured more than 151 seats in the 300-member parliament on its own, while its alliance pushed the total to 212 seats, giving the party a clear parliamentary majority.
Earlier on Tuesday, Rahman and the newly elected lawmakers took their oaths, becoming the first representatives elected since the political upheaval reshaped the country’s leadership.
The oath-taking ceremony was overseen by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, with parliamentarians pledging allegiance to Bangladesh and its constitution.
Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile to lead the BNP’s election campaign and now heads the government.
