At least ten people were killed when a bridge collapsed over a river in Gujarat’s Vadodara district on Wednesday, Indian media reported.

Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said several vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse, plunging into the river below.

At least five people were rescued, he added.

The incident follows days of heavy rainfall in the region. The collapsed structure was built in 1985, Patel said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident “deeply saddening” and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

India has faced recurring infrastructure safety issues, particularly with bridges and highways.

In 2022, the collapse of a century-old cable suspension bridge in Gujarat claimed at least 132 lives.
