Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the chief of Russia's Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, was killed in a targeted attack in Moscow on Tuesday morning.
The high-profile assassination has been claimed by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).
The 54-year-old general and his assistant were killed when a bomb concealed in an electric scooter exploded outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, according to a statement by the Russian Investigative Committee.
Unverified social media footage shows two individuals exiting the building moments before the explosion, leaving their bodies on the pavement.
The Russian authorities are expected to reassess security protocols for senior military figures in the wake of the attack.
A source within Ukraine’s SBU, speaking to Reuters, confirmed the agency's involvement and described the operation as the “liquidation” of Kirillov.
This incident marks the highest-ranking Russian military officer to be assassinated within Russia since the start of the ongoing conflict.
