Two Saudi military personnel lost their lives in an attack in Yemen, according to Saudi state media on Saturday, which stated that the attacker was linked to Yemen's defense ministry.
"An officer and a non-commissioned officer were killed, and another officer was injured as a result of a despicable and cowardly assault," stated the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), quoting defense ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki.
In 2015, Saudi Arabia formed an international coalition to intervene in Yemen to aid the internationally recognized government after Houthi rebels seized the capital, Sanaa, the previous year.
Seiyun is located in the Hadhramout governorate, which is under the control of the internationally recognized government.
The coalition forces present at the camp where the attack occurred were assisting in training local forces to fight against terrorism and smuggling, according to SPA.
The incident happened during athletics training, although it did not specify the method of the attack or provide further details about the assailant's identity or role.
A Yemeni officer told AFP that the altercation began with a verbal dispute between the Yemeni assailant and the Saudi personnel, which escalated into gunfire.
SPA mentioned that the assailant "does not reflect the honorable members of the Yemeni Ministry of Defense who value the essential and positive contributions of the coalition forces" in supporting the government.
The remains of the deceased and the injured officer have been transported to Saudi Arabia, according to SPA.
