The United Arab Emirates  is set to roll out a new national identification system by digitalising the process and eliminating physical ID cards. The project reflects the country’s commitment to digital transformation.

The facial recognition-based identity service is expected to be fully implemented by next year, with the inclusion of biometric technologies that would allow secure access to the government and private sectors across the country.

According to a report published in the Khaleej Times, the system will be accessible via a smart application.

In response to a question raised during a Federal National Council (FNC) meeting, a recent statement from the relevant authority clarified that the initiative aims to enhance security, improve accuracy, and make services more accessible for all residents.

The latest system for confirming an individual's identity would require biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, and it would be introduced in several important areas like government services, banking, telecommunications, healthcare, insurance, and hospitality and also on those sectors that rely heavily on being able to identify individuals accurately and securely.

The governing body overseeing this project is working to ensure that the system follows national rules for protecting personal data and managing risks.

“Digital identity is not just a tool; it’s a gateway to better services, stronger security, and greater convenience for everyone,” Khaleej Times quoted UAE authorities as saying.

The idea for this transformational identification system was first proposed in August 2024 under the “Government Bureaucracy Elimination Plan”.
