The United States has announced tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports, escalating tensions in its prolonged trade dispute with Beijing.

The White House said the hike was in response to China's retaliatory actions and rising concerns over U.S. dependence on foreign critical minerals.

President Donald Trump also launched an investigation into national security risks tied to imports of key minerals like cobalt, lithium, and rare-earth elements — materials essential for electric vehicle batteries and high-tech manufacturing. The administration warned of long-term supply chain vulnerabilities.

Previously, the U.S. levied a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, with China responding with a 125% duty on American imports. The new figure of 245% appears to be a cumulative tariff cap, though no official confirmation has been given.

In response, China reported stronger-than-expected economic data, with GDP growing 5.4% in Q1, industrial output rising 6.5%, and retail sales up 4.6%. Still, officials warned of a challenging global outlook and called for more domestic stimulus.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged Washington to “stop blackmailing” and engage in equal, respectful dialogue. Trump, however, insisted, “The ball is in China’s court,” pressing Beijing to initiate a trade deal.

The tariff war has also prompted China to seek support from India and the EU. The World Trade Organization has warned that these tensions could reduce global trade by up to 1.5% this year.
