Amid the ongoing debate over the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, US State Department Secretary Christopher Landau warned immigrants that “praising, rationalising, or making light” of the 31-year-old author’s assassination would not be tolerated and could result in action by authorities.

Kirk’s death has sparked an uproar online, with many condemning the killing, while others have revisited his controversial comments and views on issues such as the genocide in Gaza, immigrants, and other topics.

“In light of yesterday’s horrific assassination of a leading political figure, I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” Landau said Thursday in a post on X.

The official further added that he was “disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalising, or making light of the event,” and confirmed he had directed consular officials to take appropriate action.

In response to his remarks, thousands of people began sharing accounts, screenshots, and comments allegedly made by individuals celebrating or justifying Kirk’s murder.

Landau also stated that his government would not grant visas to individuals whose values do not align with US national security interests. However, he did not specify what specific measures would be taken against such remarks.

Popular far-right political figure and close ally of US President Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Before his death, an online petition had gathered thousands of signatures urging the university to cancel his talk.

Kirk played a key role in helping Trump build support among young voters, and his death was mourned by the US president.

Videos of the incident surfaced online, showing Kirk addressing a large crowd when a gunshot rang out. As the camera shifted, Kirk could be seen collapsing into his chair as panic spread through the audience.

At the time, he was wearing a white T-shirt with the word “freedom” printed across it.

A vocal supporter of Israel, Kirk frequently denied genocide in Gaza and was known for making disparaging remarks against Palestinians.

Calling the shooting a “dark moment for America,” Trump vowed that his administration would hunt down those who contributed to the killing of Kirk and other acts of political violence, including the organisations that fund and support it.
