Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Rashid Langrial, has assured traders that those who cannot afford to install the Point of Sale (POS) system will be provided relief and that no trader will be subjected to harassment.
According to details, a delegation led by President of the Central Organisation of Traders Pakistan, Kashif Chaudhry, met FBR Chairman Rashid Langrial. Member Inland Revenue Zubair Bilal and other officials were also present during the meeting.
Kashif Chaudhry briefed the FBR Chairman on the challenges faced by traders, including alleged harassment by FBR officials and the difficulties small traders are encountering due to the implementation of the POS system.
He stated that despite traders’ reservations, the implementation of the POS system was initiated for local and international brands and chain stores.
Kashif Chaudhry further said that the introduction of the POS system has significantly increased operating costs for small businesses.
Measures taken in the name of documentation — including inspections, fines and shop closures — have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among traders.
He alleged that the FBR has now extended its enforcement beyond brands and chain stores to general markets and small shops, adopting what he described as an aggressive approach.
The presence of large convoys and raids in markets, he said, gives the impression of an operation against an enemy force.
According to him, this conduct amounts to humiliation and mental distress, with notices being issued arbitrarily. He claimed that some traders are released after informal settlements, while those who refuse face harassment, sealing of shops and financial penalties.
