KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister for Transport and Information, Sharjeel Inam Memon, has announced a major expansion of Karachi’s public transport network, revealing that a large fleet of double-decker and electric buses is expected to arrive in the city during the current year.
Speaking about the provincial government's transport initiatives, Memon said the new buses would be introduced in phases and deployed on various routes across Karachi to improve commuting facilities for residents.
He stated that the Sindh government is working towards a vision of developing a modern and efficient public transport system, building on the success of the Peoples Bus Service.
“After the successful launch of the Peoples Bus Service, we are now adding a significant number of electric and double-decker buses to further strengthen the city’s transport infrastructure,” he said.
Memon noted that the planned electric buses would offer environmentally friendly, cost-effective and comfortable travel options, while the introduction of double-decker buses would add a new dimension to Karachi’s urban transport culture.
He added that the government’s ongoing transport projects are helping shape the future of the metropolis and reflect a broader commitment to modernising public services.
“This is not merely an increase in the number of buses; it marks the beginning of a new journey towards a more modern Karachi,” the minister said.
The initiative forms part of the Sindh government’s broader efforts to improve urban mobility, reduce transport challenges and promote sustainable public transportation in Pakistan’s largest city.
